frequently asked questions

What’s hypnosis? Will you make me quack like a duck?

Don’t worry - there’ll be no quacking!

Hypnosis can be described as a state of focused attention.

We enter trance naturally, sometimes many times a day. For example, when we’re competent drivers we no longer need to concentrate on accelerator, brake, clutch, steering…our subconscious minds are doing all that, so our conscious minds can pay attention to the road conditions. This is akin to being in trance.

People who knit find that they can pay attention to the TV, with no need to look at their work. Again, this is a sign that their subconscious is doing the knitting task while their conscious mind is engaged in something else entirely.

Your therapist will lead you into trance by reading to you, leading you in relaxation and helping you to visualise calming images. You will be in control all the time and cannot be instructed to do anything that you do not wish to do.

Most clients report feeling relaxed, calm and rejuvenated at the end of each session.

During the pandemic we became used to conducting appointments over Zoom. Can I still do this?

The Coleby Practice offers face-to-face appointments at our premises in Rugby, Warwickshire, and online over Zoom.

Many clients find that being in their own homes helps them relax very quickly. Some clients like to sit in a comfy chair, others recline on their sofas - you can choose where you would like to be.

Are there appointments available at the weekends, or in the evenings?

The Coleby Practice’s core business hours are 0900-1900 Monday to Friday.

If you need an appointment at a different time, please do get in touch and we will work with you to find a solution.

How much does it cost?

Your initial consultation appointment is free of charge and you should allow fifty minutes for this.

Further appointments are fifty minutes long and cost £70.

Please ask about discounted rates for children..

A smoking cessation appointment costs £195. Please allow up to two-and-a-half hours for a smoking cessation consultation: this is the only appointment that you will need.

Body confidence classes cost £60 for a series of six, or £12 per class on a pay-as-you-go basis. Each class lasts a little over ninety minutes and there is an opportunity to stop for a chat and a cup of herbal tea with your classmates at the end. Class places are limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

The Coleby Practice accepts payment by bank transfer and payment cards.

Can I contact you between my appointments if I feel anxious?

You will find that your appointments and the tasks you choose to do between appointments will help you to cope better. It is likely that weekly appointments will be enough to get you feeling more like yourself.

If I have more than one issue can you help me?

At your initial consultation your therapist will ask you your reasons for coming to therapy, and what you hope to achieve. The therapist will use your answers to these and other questions to determine how best to proceed.

Phobia treatments are usually very quick, requiring just an initial consultation plus three other appointments. Please note that if you are very anxious about other things, we will need to reduce your anxiety with additional therapy first, so that the phobia treatment can be effective.

What can I expect during my appointments?

Hypnotherapy appointments are highly structured and follow a pattern that soon becomes familiar. This can be very reassuring to clients of all ages.

At the initial consultation your therapist will explain the pattern of future appointments and answer questions you may have about the process.
